4 Simple Recipes for Natural Homemade Egg Dyes

Time to tap the power of your pantry

Spring means the start of shorts weather, tulip bulbs transforming into blooms, and the age old act of dyeing eggs.

While nobody quite knows where the tradition started, there’s no question that hundreds (thousands?) of years later, it’s still an easy way to get friends and family together to test out everyone’s artistic prowess.

Today, our team here at Handsome Brook Farms is taking the seasonal tradition to the next level by sharing some of our favorite mini recipes for natural homemade dyes. From turmeric powder to purple cabbage, your kitchen might just be an untapped palette of paints waiting to be used. Happy dyeing!

Recipe:

Place dye source in the bottom of a pot, and add 3 cups of water, bringing to a boil over high heat.

Simmer for 30 minutes, then add 3 tablespoons of white vinegar and let cool.

Strain liquid into a bowl and add eggs, making sure they are covered entirely by the dye.

Let sit for the recommended time period – or until you’ve reached the desired shade.
For teal eggs:

Use one small head of chopped purple cabbage, and soak eggs overnight.

For terracotta eggs:

Use the skins of 2 yellow onions. Soak for 6 hours. For a deeper red, use more onion skins.

For marigold eggs:

Use 3 tablespoons of turmeric powder, and let sit for 3 hours for a lighter gold color, or overnight for deep gold.

For pink eggs:

Use 2 chopped beets, and let sit for 3 hours.
